Merit Awards

The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Announces its launch of Student Academic Merit Awards

NBSTSA is committed to demonstrating professional competence of surgical technologists and surgical first assistants through examination, conferring of certification, and ongoing recognition through continuing education. NBSTSA’s goals include dedication to and support of its credential holders, as well as individuals entering or working in the professions of surgical technology or surgical first assisting.

NBSTSA has a long history of recognizing educational excellence in surgical technology through general or named/dedicated scholarship awards both independently and in collaboration with partner organizations.

NBSTSA created its Student Academic Merit Award in 2025 to continue its commitment to supporting students in surgical technology and surgical first assisting as they prepare to launch their professional careers.

NBSTSA will award one $3000 legacy award, one $2000 award, and fifteen $1000 awards based on demonstrated dedication to education, commitment to quality surgical patient care, and enhancing public safety.

NBSTSA’s legacy award honors Dalton Gay, a student and athlete from North Carolina, who excelled in his academic and athletic pursuits and was deeply dedicated to public service. Dalton had a passion for helping to improve the lives of those less fortunate than himself both in his community and internationally. Dalton’s young life was cut short due to illness at age 17; however, his contributions and impact on the lives he touched with his generosity continues. NBSTSA is honoring Dalton’s legacy with an award to students who demonstrate that same passion and dedication to education and service.
